Ég hef alltaf verið veikur fyrir skrýtnum coverlögum eða þekjum eins og ég hef ákveðið að nýyrða hugtakið. Mér hefur eiginlega fundist þeim mun skemmtilegra ef þekjan er bjánaleg – og því bjánalegri því betra. Margar bjánalegar þekjur eru gerðar þannig viljandi en oft er skemmtilegra ef um óviljaverk er að ræða. Þannig á ég ansi skemmtilegan disk, Celebrities Butcher Songs of the Beatles, þar sem ýmsar stjörnur (t.d. Joe Peschi, Terry Savalas og Bing Crosby) flytja Bítlalög afar illa en á einstaklega einlægan hátt. Einnig eru útgáfur Leonard Nimoy af ýmsum smellum, t.d. Proud Mary, I Walk The Line og Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, alveg óheyrilega skemmtilega slæmar en ég ætla nú ekki pína neinn með því að sinni.
Viljandi bjánalegar þekjur geta heppnast misjafnlega enda er grínlistin ekki öllum lagin. Ein þeirra sveita sem hefur gert út á paródíur er Dread Zeppelin sem þekur Led Zeppelin lög með feitlagna Elvis eftirhermu sem forsöngvara. Ég hef nú ekki lagt mig eftir plötum sveitarinnar en eitt laga þeirra finnst mér alltaf jafnskemmtilegt. Það er samsuða úr lögunum Heartbreak Hotel og Heartbreaker og heppnast líka svona vel – svo er myndbandið algjör snilld:
Bítlarnir hafa ætíð verið vinsælt viðfangsefni í þessum fræðum en kvikmyndin The Rutles eftir Monty Pythonin Eric Idle er ágætis brandari á kostnað Bítlanna. Myndin kom úr árið 1978 var nokkurs konar fyrirmynd seinni tíma tónlistarmockumentary mynda eins og Spinal Tap ofl. Lögin í The Rutles eru illar samdar eftirhermur af Bítlalögum og mörg hver pínlega vond og skemmtileg:

I have always had a soft spot for weird cover versions. I like them silly and the sillier the cover is the better. Many silly and stupid covers are made with a purpose but it’s much more fun if they are unintentionally silly. I have a CD called Celebrities Butcher Songs of the Beatles where various stars (e.g. Joe Peschi, Terry Savalas and Bing Crosby) sing songs by The Beatles horribly but in a sincere way. Leonard Nimoy did cover versions of some hits, e.g. Proud Mary, I Walk The Line and Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, and they are so awfully bad and amusing but I’m not going to torture anybody today.
Deliberately silly covers can be a hit and miss since comedy isn’t in everybody’s blood. One band that has been doing parodies is Dread Zeppelin who covers Led Zeppelin songs and on vocals is a chubby Elvis imitator. I haven’t heard any of their albums but there is one song that I have always enjoyed. It’s a mix of Heartbreak Hotel and Heartbreaker and they pull it off – and then the video is brilliant:
The Beatles have always been a popular subject to poke fun at and the film The Rutles by Eric Idle from Monty Python is a fine joke at their expense. The film is from 1978 and prototype for later music mockumentaries like Spinal Tap. The songs in The Rutles film are very bad imitations of Beatles songs and some are painfully bad and entertaining:
