Neutral Milk Hotel – April 8th
Síðan í aðeins meira rokk en sjúgeis sveitin Chapterhouse gerði apríl líka að umfjöllunarefni á plötunni Whirlpool frá árinu 1991. Sveitin sú byrjaði árið 1987 og var Whirlpool fyrsta breiðskífa sveitarinnar en 
tónlistin þar svipar mikið til annara sjúgeisara tímabilsins (t.d. Ride, Lush og Slowdive). Sveitin varð ekkert mjög langlíf, en næstu plötu (Blood Music, 1993) þurftu þeir að afturkalla úr búðum vegna ólöglegrar sampl-notkunar, og dagaði sveitin uppi stuttu síðar. Fyrrum meðlimir Chapterhouse spila í dag m.a. í sveitunum Mojave 3 og Tunng.
Það lag sem fyrst kemur upp í hugann í apríl er þó April Skies með The Jesus & Mary Chain af Darklands (1987). Lagið er ekki eins gegnumsýrt af gítarsurgi og fídbakki líkt og mörg lög sveitarinnar og er reyndar bara ansi ljúft.

Nú þegar við erum farin að horfa á aprílhimininn þá er ekki úr vegi að enda á léttu nótunum og fá smá regnboga til að lífga upp á mánuðinn. Það er auðvitað hinn ofvirki þýski Peter Thomas og hans Sound Orchestra sem flytur, en Thomas gerði tónlist fyrir tugi eða hundruði kvikmynda og sjónvarpsþátta á 7. og 8. áratugnum. Á tímabili fjárfesti ég í ósköpunum öllum af diskum með tónlist Peter Thomas, enda leynist mörg snilldin þar, og þetta er af plötunni Peter Scores – The Erotic World of the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra.

I might be wrong, but I have always the feeling that there are more songs named after April than other months. It might be the feeling of a coming spring that makes April a good subject for a song or maybe not.
Let’s start with Neutral Milk Hotel beacuse there is a bit of April on their debut album, On Avery Island, from 1996. At least there are songs for April 1st and the 8th of April …

The shoegaze band Chapterhouse sang also about April on the album Whirlpool from 1991. The band started in 1987 and Whirlpool was their first LP, the music is similar to other shoegaze bands of the era (e.g. Ride, Lush and Slowdive). The band didn’t live long, but they had to take the next album (Blood Music, 1993) out of stores due to some illegal use of samples on it and the band quit a few years later. Some former members of Chapterhouse play now in the bands Mojave 3 and Tunng.
The song that I think first of in April is April Skies by The Jesus & Mary Chain from Darklands (1987). The song isn’t filled with noise and feedback like many of the bands songs and is in fact rather nice.

Now that we have started looking up in the April sky we should really end on the light note with some rainbows to brighten up this month. That’s of course the hyperactive German Peter Thomas and his Sound Orchestra who performs, but Thomas composed music for hundreds of films and tv-shows in the 60’s and 70’s. For years I used to buy loads of cd’s with his music and there are some really great and groovy stuff on there. This song is from a compilation album called Peter Scores – The Erotic World of the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra.
